Value for money! Figures for sample Hampshire libraries show that Emsworth library is good value for money.

“The figures show that the Emsworth branch is not only very successful, but also much cheaper to run than comparable small libraries,” says local resident and author Bob Smyth.

“It attracts eighty-plus visits per opening hour, which is almost double that of similar branches. While the running cost is high in relation to its floor space, it provides excellent value. The cost per visit is half that of other places - 50p per visit as against 90p, 94p, £1.05 and £1.10 at four examples.
“This demolishes any case for moving to premises which would attract fewer visits.”

As Hampshire County Council (HCC) agrees, “Emsworth Library is a popular and busy library, much loved by its customers and staff.” They say, however, that “the listed building is small and difficult to maintain. It is also the most expensive library to run in Hampshire in terms of cost per square metre.” ( Find the figures on the News Page)

It is certainly small, but perfectly adequate nonetheless. It squeezes a lot in, and its small floorspace makes the cost-per-metre calculation misleading. The cost-per-user is much lower. - Infinite riches in a little room” (Marlowe)

The council wants to save money by moving the library to the Emsworth Community Centre in the old school classrooms at the back of the Fire Station. Advantages would include saving on the present rental, since the Community Centre is already council property. There would be more shelf space, a bigger children’s area, and facilities would include toilets and café.

The disadvantage is the location. The premises are difficult to get to on foot from the village centre, involving the awkward crossing of either the main road or North Street. Car park access is also tricky. Extra traffic within the car park is likely to clog it up altogether.

The council invites comments on its “library” website. This Friends of Emsworth Library website invites those who want the library to stay in the centre to help save it. People can get in touch by emailing us.
